Stop Letting One Bad Day Define You

When was the last time you felt proud of yourself — not for being perfect, but simply for showing up?

Another year started fast. I had goals. I wanted to be more organized. More balanced. Better at work. More present at home. And I wanted something just for me.

Already March. Between work, home, kids, snow days (Michigan winters don’t help), sick days, and constant juggling — I’ve realized I need to give myself permission to let some things be good enough. Especially at work. We spend most of our waking hours working. What happens there affects our personal life. And when you’re leading an important project, it’s easy to feel pressure instead of privilege.

Recently, I met a friend for coffee. A few weeks later she texted me:  “I loved how excited you were talking about your project. You motivated me.” That surprised me. Because in my head, I still question myself. When things don’t go as planned,  I still take it personally. It still makes me question my ability.

So I started something new.

The Confidence Journal (Evidence Over Emotion)

You don’t want your confidence shattered every time something doesn’t go perfectly. So I committed to trying this for 10 days. I’m on Day 5.

Step 1 — Write 3 things you did right today.

Not big things. Real things.

  • Contributed thoughtfully in a meeting
  • Asked a smart question that helped the team move forward
  • Showed up even when exhausted
  • Finished something you didn’t want to start

This builds evidence.

Step 2 — Improve one hard thing daily. What feels hard right now?

  • Public speaking?
  • Technical depth?
  • Patience with your kids?
  • Setting boundaries?

Pick ONE small action each day. Consistency > intensity.

Step 3 — Remind yourself who you are. Say it clearly:  “I am someone who moves forward.” Not someone perfect. Not someone who never fails. Someone who keeps moving.

As I welcome March, I’m reminding myself: It’s okay not to be perfect. Success looks different at every stage of life. Be compassionate with yourself. Enjoy your life while learning and growing. Because the truth is — Sometimes we are doing much better than we think.

If you’re juggling work, home, ambition, snow days, sick kids, and your own expectations… You’re not alone. March is here. Let’s move forward — not perfectly, but intentionally.

That’s the goal, and I  can’t wait to share how it turns out!
