Who makes us the happiest or the most miserable other than ourselves? Of course, the people who we care the most about, and who are very close to us. For this reason, we decided to start our first life coaching event with our families.

I was very excited, and also very nervous because I was not sure how my mom and dad would react. I must admit, the Turkish culture, especially my parents’ generation, is not familiar with life coaching and positive thinking. For this reason, I was not sure if they would participate in the workshop. On the other hand, my husband was worried about my parent’s and sisters’ reactions to each other during the workshop. He assumed that they could offend each other during the activities. However, everything turned out better than we could imagine.

We put together a nice presentation that included the research we had conducted throughout the years and recommendations that helped us to achieve our goals. Also, we created handouts that helped everyone to engage, express their feelings, and understand the process.

We followed all the steps that we would do for other coachees. So, we started our training from the introduction. I loved hearing my family members’ introductions.

First, we focused on the current status of our lives, how satisfied we were with our life, work, career, friends and families, health, etc. We provided two exercise files, where everyone could grade themselves from 0 to 10. It was great to see that no one judged each other, and everyone was honest with their responses. Especially, my dad was very honest; he was not good at saving and investing. I never heard him accepting it until our workshop.

Our second step was setting goals while prioritizing the aspect of their lives that they scored the lowest. We planned to show them that we all need to focus on what matters the most in our lives. If our health scores 3-4 out of 10 our top goals should include a healthy diet, exercise, healthy habits, etc.

Third, we created vision boards, which was very new to them. They shared ideas and helped each other. After each step, everyone shortly explained their current status, desired status, and their vision boards.

We also talked about books that could help them with decluttering, meditation, and positive thinking. We were so happy that everyone was very motivated and ready to take action to create their dream life.

The best part of the training was it brought us closer together. Not only did it give everyone a vision, but it also gave them the power to believe that they were the leader of their lives. It was one of the best family gatherings we had in a long time.

If nothing else, our goal was to teach them they need to take responsibility for their lives and their decisions will shape their future. Also, my husband wanted them to set goals that scare them, make them uncomfortable and deep inside they truly want.

I can’t wait to see the results of the training. We will have a follow-up workshop and I will share their success stories.

I am so grateful that we have completed our first Huri and Matt Life Coaching event. I love the quote from Kemi Sogunle, “What you feed your mind, will lead your life.” So, during the training, I believe that we planted some good ideas in their minds.
